Big Man Needs Pickup

One of the great things about traveling to tournaments throughout the course of a year is that you get a chance to watch and evaluate players that come out of relative obscurity.
In attending the recent Meramec Shootout, one of the players we had hoped to watch was Chavis Landfair, a 6-10 sophomore center from Mineral Area C.C. in Park Hills, Mo.

This past fall, Landfair had attracted interest from schools such as UAB and St. Louis after transferring into Mineral Area from Division II Arkansas Tech.
Landfair was inserted into the game for a brief two minute stretch before being yanked by MAC Head Coach Tim Gray.
Gray told JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com that he felt Landfair would not be a good fit against Vincennes, as the Cardinals planned to defend the Trailblazers aggressively with a pressing style. And who is to argue with Gray, as Mineral Area dumped the nationally ranked Blazers, 73-71.
"He's good enough where he can help some programs where they play a little slower and don't do quite as much pressing as we do," Gray said. "It's more a situation that he is struggling a little bit with the way we play right now."
"We have not given up on him," Gray continued. "We feel like there are some programs out there that we are going to play that he is going to help us against."
As for Landfair's recruitment, that has also slowed down quite a bit.
"It was busy early, but it's really calmed down," Gray said. "I am not sure where it is going to go. St. Louis and UAB came in and decided he was not good enough, and I am not sure step two will go."
Landfair, who hails from Starkville, Miss., won't sign until the spring, and JUCO Junction will keep you posted on his recruitment throughout the next several months.
