Big man Mitchell picks Big South school

Kenny Mitchell won a state championship in his senior year at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga. Now the 6-foot-7, 220-pound power forward is hoping to win some championships in the Big South.
Mitchell verbally committed to Charleston Southern on Sunday night, joining a talented crew already locked up by Barclay Radebaugh and staff. Mitchell joins fellow Georgians Joel Lamb and Kelvin Martin in the 2008 recruiting class for CSU.

"I liked the environment there and I felt like I could get along with the players that they have there," Mitchell said. "I got along with the coaches and everyone there seemed really cool to me. Plus, it's only three or four hours away from home."
Mitchell enters college on the highest of notes. He played a large role in Columbia's second state championship in three years and tested his game on a daily basis against South Carolina bound big man Darius Morrow.
Mitchell improved great strides under the tutelage of his coach Phil McCrary, one of the best big men coaches in the Southeast. Mitchell said he feels well prepared for the next level.
"Coach pushed me day in and day out. You had to get better if you wanted to play," Mitchell said. "He has really helped me get ready [for college]."
Tulane, Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Savannah State, North Florida, Fairfield and East Tennessee State were also in the picture.
Charleston Southern hopes to use Mitchell early and often, he said.
"Coach [Radebaugh] said they would like to use me at the power forward position and also be able to step out sometimes because they run a four and out style of play," Mitchell said. "I want to help them all-around basically."
