Best Buy Classic kicks off in Chicago

It was quality over quantity that stood out on the first night of the Adidas Best Buy Classic in the north suburbs of Chicago.

Brandon Jenkins - 6-foot-4, PG/SG, Maywood (Ill.) Proviso East, 2013: A combo guard with the gift of vision, the athletic Jenkins weaved through defenders at will as his Full Package Elite team blew out Iowa Pump N' Run. Jenkins has terrific bounce around the rim, can change directions at top speed in transition and is a dual threat as a scorer or distributor. His anticipation allows him to pass the ball the moment the defense comes to help, while he is explosive enough to jump up and score if the defense is back on its heels. Jenkins is hearing from Oklahoma State, Wichita State and Iowa State the most, and he said the Cowboys stand out the most to him.

Nick Allen - 5-foot-11, PG, Milwaukee (Wisc.) Morse Marshall, 2013: Allen was the most explosive scorer in the gym on Friday night as he poured in 27 points in a win for his Devin Harris All-Stars team. Allen was stroking the long ball, but more impressively, he was able to finish through contact at the rim for and-ones. A true point guard who is able to create for teammates off the bounce, Allen was more inclined to take shots on Friday, as he simply couldn't miss. He might not have great size, but he has an array of crossover moves off the dribble and explosive quickness when changing direction, making him the pesky scoring guard that opposing teams hate playing against. Nebraska, Georgetown and Wisconsin are recruiting Allen at this point, but he expects more interest to come his way in July.

William Gates - 6-foot-2, SG, Chicago (Ill.) Gwendolyn Brooks, 2013: A smooth and shifty guard with deep range on his jumper, Gates helped lead his Full Package Elite team by knocking down four three-pointers in the game. He's good at freezing defenders off the bounce and changing speeds to create separation to get his shot off. Gates isn't a great athlete, but he's heady and creative enough to find openings for his shots. Best as a scorer from mid and deep range, Gates also is a good passer in transition who is willing to find the open man. He has an offer from Kent State and is hearing from Butler, Penn State and Oregon State.

DeAndre Downey - 6-foot-9, PF, Milwaukee (Wisc.) Riverside, 2013: Downey is a super athletic postman who has quick feet and tremendous length, which he uses to effectively guard either in the post or on the wing. He's bouncy off both his first and second jump around the paint and shows good timing as a shot blocker. Downey plays with a high motor and physicality while aggressively pursuing rebounds on both ends of the court. Offensively, the Devin Harris All-Stars' big man is very raw, but he can finish around the rim and convert from the foul line. Downey is being recruited hardest by Minnesota, Creighton and DePaul.

Faith Pope - 6-foot-8, PF, Ottumwa (Iowa) Ottumwa, 2013: Pope is a super athletic forward who plays with a high motor for Iowa Pump N' Run. He's somewhat raw as an offensive player, but he finds ways to be efficient by scoring around the rim off of offensive rebounds with his leaping ability and quick feet. As a prospect who has yet to grab his first college scholarship offer, Pope is one of the best kept secrets in the Midwest. He has tremendous potential as he continues to develop his skill-set.

Demetrius Woodley - 6-foot-3, SG, Milwaukee (Wisc.) Vincent, 2013: Woodley is an athletic slashing guard who plays an efficient all-around floor game for his Devin Harris All-Stars team. He can score the ball at a high rate without getting many shots because he attacks the rim so hard that he lives at the foul line. He's a very quick first-step slasher who drives the ball north-south without wasting any momentum. Also a good defender and a tough competitor, Woodley is hearing from Marquette, Wisconsin, Xavier and Toledo.
