Beach Ball Classic: first round action

Myrtle Beach, S.C.- Rivals.com caught a couple games Wednesday night before the quarterfinals crank up on Thursday at the Beach Ball Classic. Indiana commitment Bud Mackey impressed with his potential, and the No. 5 ranked prospect in the class of 2008 Delvon Roe continues to get better and better.

St. Edward (Ohio) 78, Father Carr (Canada) 54

Delvon Roe 12 points (6-11 from the field, 0-2 from the line), 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, 4 assists, 1 turnover

Roe's game continues to develop as it did over the summer. Playing for a well coached and team oriented program, Roe will have a flawless transition to the college game. Most impressive Wednesday night was the way Roe got his hands on basketballs on the defensive end and also passed the ball up the court.

In the post, the lefty scored on jump hooks and dunks. He got to the basket once from the high post with a nifty change of pace move off his first dribble. His jumper from the outside was flat, however, where he went 0 for 2.

Impressed with his opportunity to practice recently at the Dean Dome, Roe has UNC along with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Kansas on his school list. Assistants from both UNC and Ohio State watched him play Wednesday night.

Roe, who progressively improved skill wise during the spring and summer, not only demonstrated improved passing ability but also an increasingly mature approach to the game.

"More than anything I know the game better than before," said Roe. "I used to come out and try to just out score and out rebound people. Now I'm doing a better job letting the game come to me."

With his recruitment slowing down somewhat during the season, roe is still keeping a close eye on the playing style of his five schools.

"I want to play in an offense system that runs and a defensive system that gets after it."

Scott Co. (Ky.) 85, Socastee (S.C.) 55

Bud Mackey 16 points (5-17 from the field, 3-10 from three, 3-8 from the line), 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 5 assists, 4 turnovers

A long, smooth, athletic combo guard, Mackey plays the point for Scott Co. and looks equipped to play either guard spot at Indiana. The 2008 prospect didn't shoot the ball well Wednesday night, but he has a good looking stroke with great wrist action.

A 3-2 zone by Socastee slowed down the action and forced a lot of perimeter shots, but Mackey showed an extra gear on several occasions off a left handed hesitation move. Still in the process of filling out his body, Mackey used his length and quick burst to get his hands on balls. He will register as a four-star prospect in the next Rivals.com ranking.

Jordan Lee 11 points (5-8 from the field, 0-1 from three, 1-3 from the line), 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 assists, 1 turnovers

An intriguing 2008 big man, Lee is still developing strength wise but moves very well. He scored in the post off jump hooks and turnaround jumpers and looked good shooting the ball out to 15-feet. Although he shoots a flat shot right now, he does have the potential to extend his range. He also handled the ball well in the high post area and showed flashes of ability in the open court. Much in need of strength to defend and rebound down low, Lee is quick to the ball. It will be interesting to see how his body and game develops.

Matt Walls 19 points (7-16 from the field 2-9 from three, 3-4 from the line), 8 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists, 2 turnovers

A solid mid-major prospect, Walls has a knack for scoring and a physical approach to coming up with the ball as his 8 rebounds and 5 steals attest.

Mt. St. Joseph 77, Myrtle Beach 38

Dino Gregory 18 points (7-12 from the field, 4-8 from the line), 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 blocks, 3 assists, 2 turnovers

Against a very limited hometown team, Gregory, who is headed to Maryland, was dominant with his athleticism and effort. Thursday's quarterfinal match up against St. Edward will provide a much truer evaluation.

Henry Sims 16 points (7-10 from the field, 1-1 from three, 1-2 from the line), 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist

Sims, the No. 46 ranked prospect in the class of 2008, looks like he is on his way to achieving his high potential. Avoiding a turnover in 21 minutes of play, Sims was aggressive and moved his feet well. Beyond being poised with the ball as a ball handler, Sims even stepped out and hit a three-pointer.

Galena (Nev.) 70, Miami Senior (Fla.) 66

Luke Babbitt 26 points (9-13 from the field, 1-5 from three, 7-10 from the line), 9 rebounds, 1 block, 1 assist, 2 turnovers

Ed Rios 37 points (13-30 from the field, 7-17 from three, 4-4 from the line), 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 4 turnovers

Jason Clark 8 points (3-8 from the field, 1-3 from three, 1-3 from the line), 2 rebounds, 4 steals, 6 turnovers
