During Friday's preview of this weekend's visitors, we wrote that it shouldn't be long after this weekend before Rivals150 power forward Alex Illikainen made a decision. Turns out he didn't need that long.
Sunday morning, the 6-foot-9 four man from Minnesota who is playing his senior season at Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy decided that he had seen enough and committed to Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers during the tail end of his official visit to Madison.
The three-star prospect who ranks No. 130 announced via his twitter account that he would play his college ball in the Big Ten.
"Happy to announce my commitment to Wisconsin!," Illikainen tweeted. "Happy to be a Badger!"
Stylistically, Illikainen appears to be a good fit for Ryan and the Badgers. Though currently a bit on the thin side, he has the type of frame that will allow him to add plenty of muscle without losing mobility and he is a player who prefers to play facing the hoop.
Illikainen runs the floor well, he can shoot with range and he is a very good passer out of the high post. A former top 100 player, Illikainen has the tools to return to that status and he will be prepared well for the rigors of Big Ten play at Brewster. The key will be adding to his low post game and becoming more of a consistent factor on the glass.
With Illikainen committed, the Badgers now have two Rivals150 members committed for the class of 2015. Four-star shooting guard Brevin Pritzl ranks No. 77 nationally and Wisconsin is left with two scholarships to use. One of those is certainly marked for star in-state big man Diamond Stone who ranks No. 5 nationally and has the Badgers in his final five.
