Arizona State reels in talented sophomore

THE RIVALS150: 2015 | 2016
At Arizona State, Herb Sendek has never shied away from offering prospects very early if he feels good about them. That process landed him a soon to be four-star point guard late Wednesday night.

Class of 2017 point guard Markus Howard from Gilbert (Ariz.) Perry actually got offered by ASU as an eighth grader. The 5-foot-10 floor general decided on Tuesday night that he didn't need to wait any longer to pull the trigger and ended his recruitment in favor of the Sun Devils.
Howard's mother Noemi confirmed the commitment with Rivals.com and Chris Karpman of ASUDevils.com was able to speak with Markus himself. It sounds like the Sun Devils early work and commitment to showing him how badly they wanted him paid off.
"They had a great vision," Howard told Karpman. "They all jumped up and screamed and were very excited. Just for them to be that excited about me shows how dedicated and how loyal they are. They went way beyond anyone I've seen from any other school."
A highly skilled point guard, Howard impressed Rivals.com during the summer of 2014. He is in total control and can play as a primary scorer or a setup man. He shoots with range, has a gift for advancing the ball up the floor with long passes but what stands out the most is that Howard has the ability to play at full speed while staying under complete control.
Since he is just starting his sophomore year, Howard has time to add size but even if he doesn't grow any taller he should be ok physically. He is already quite strong for a young player and is just as dedicated in the weight room as he is on the floor working on his skill game.
Time will tell how big of a commitment Howard is for Sendek and the Sun Devils, but all early indications point to him being a terrific early pick up and he will be among the early four-stars in the class of 2017 when Rivals.com unveils our first rankings of the sophomore class in September.
