Maybe it is his quiet and easy going demeanor, maybe people have just been slow to catch on to his ability. Whatever the case, five-star power forward Jarrett Allen has managed to keep a relatively low profile given the high-level nature of his talent.
Hype or no hype, it doesn't matter to the 6-foot-9, 215-pound junior big man at Austin (Texas) St. Stephen's. He is happy to do his thing and let what happens happen.
What's happened so far this spring has been domination on the floor. Playing with Texas P.R.O. on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit, Allen has been highly productive, averaging 21.1 points while grabbing nine rebounds a contest and shooting just over 62 percent from the floor.
"It's been the team playing well first," Allen said. "Then I've been running the court and really crashing the offensive boards and playing tough."
Though he is still a bit on the slim side, Allen has all the tools that a potentially elite power forward should have. He has very good hands, he has good footwork, he run the floor, he can face and shoot and he is a good passer out of double teams. He's also gotten much more aggressive.
"I've improved my confidence level," said Allen. "Last year I didn't really feel confident with my game and things like throwing up my left hook but this year I've gotten a lot better. I've got to work on strength."
Allen is continuously testing himself. During the summer he works with a well-known ex-NBA player in Houston as often as possible and he finds himself going up against pros who are looking to humble him on a regular basis.
"I work with John Lucas in the summer almost every day and that's a big part of development," said Allen. "Playing with the pros helps tremendously because it shows you what you have to work on when they are just pushing you around."
So far, Allen holds offers from hometown Texas, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Houston, SMU, Notre Dame, TCU and Virginia Tech.
Not surprisingly, new Longhorns coach Shaka Smart is doing what he can to keep Allen home
"He's really trying to bond with me," said Allen. "He's trying to know me as a person and really get me to know him as a person."
So far, Allen has no timetable for making a decision or cutting his school list. He's simply focused on improvement and is happy to be left alone to do his thing without a bunch of attention.
"I'm not worried about (attention)," said Allen. "I'm just playing."
