ABCD Spotlight: Willie Kemp

Perhaps the best place to watch and evaluate Willie Kemp isn't in a fast breaking, little defense setting like a shoe camp but if you watch him long enough, you'll see why he's becoming such at hot point guard commodity. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound point guard from Bolivar (Tenn.) High School has had one of the best AAU seasons of any class of 2006 prospect this year and he's seeing his recruitment blossom because of it.

Rewind to April where Kemp and his Memphis Pump 'N Run team claimed the loaded Real Deal on the Hill. He claimed top honors from the tournament and led his team to a huge victory over Spiece Indy Heat.
In the latest Rivals.com top 150 hoops rankings, Kemp shot up to the No. 2X spot overall in the rising senior class. Since then, the pass-first point guard said his life has changed.
"People look at me a lot differently now," Kemp said. "I went from being ranked No. 99 and a three-star guy to where I'm at now but I know I still have to play hard and show people what I can do. I know things are different so I have play hard every game.
"Recruiting is a lot different now, too," Kemp said. "I didn't used to get many calls but now I do."
Kemp said he's heard from Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, NC State, Florida, Tennessee and Memphis. The five-star prospect said all of the schools have offered him and remains open in the process.
"I just want to focus on playing right now but when school starts back up, I want to go visit in the fall so I can watch their players and see how the school works when the students are there," he said.
Looking solely at his numbers (averaging 4.3 points, 3.5 assists and 2.3 rebounds) here at the ABCD camp, it would be easy to say he's not having a stellar showing. Not really. Kemp is a pass first non-stop defender who scores when he needs to. That's something that a lot of kids haven't grasped in the camp setting.
"Being a point guard - it's not always about scoring. It's about having great teammates and making them better," Kemp said. "They look to you to lead them and I just try to find them the ball so they can make baskets. I can score but I want to play hard and play it like it's my last game the minute I hit the floor."
And that's why he's wanted by so many programs.
