A Look Back At All Hallows-Bishop Loughlin

Using a disciplined offensive approach and applying
some stifling defensive pressure, All Hallows bounced

Brooklyn's Bishop Loughlin from the quarterfinals of
the CHSAA playoffs Wednesday night by a 59-51 count.
All Hallows' patience on the offensive end
translated into high-percentage looks, while their
defensive tenacity translated into few quality looks
for their opponent. Senior shooting guard Bobby
Santiago, a cerebral wing, led coach John Carey's
senior-laden lineup with 16 points. Southpaw sniper
Ricky Soliver chipped in 13 points, while rising
sophomore Ronald Ramon and 6'7'' banger Kiril
Wachsmann each chipped in 10 points.
"The two keys to this game was our patience on
offense and big plays we made," said Carey. "We really
got some heady play from our guards."
Nip and tuck early, All Hallows was able pull ahead
by 27-26 at the half, keyed by nine first quarter
points by Soliver. After Jason Olive opened the second
half with a three-pointer off glass and a putback to
put Loughlin up by a pair, All Hallows' patience on
the offensive end began paying off, as a pair of
leaners by Ramon and point guard Marvin McCullough and
a lay-in by Santiago where the senior deftly used his
body to convert knotted the game at 35 with 3:48 left
to play in the third quarter.
With control of the game up for grabs, All Hallows
took charges on three consecutive Loughlin
possessions, while using a McCullough pull-up to take
a 38-35 advantage with little over a minute left in
the corner. After McCullough shook look from his
defender with a crossover and went in for the deuce,
Loughlin was unable to get a shot off before the horn,
All Hallows taking a 40- 36 into the fourth quarter.
Thanks to an emphatic dunk by Olive and a pair of
free throws by Sumpter, Loughlin was able to hang
around for the first few opening minutes of the
fourth. It was Santiago's play down the stretch that
helped seal the victory, however, particularly after
McCullough fouled out with 4:30 to play. His three at
5:37 put All Hallows up five, at 45-40, and just when
it looked like Loughlin was going to climb back into
it, as Olive found Sumpter for a turnaround in the
paint to cut the deficit to two, the senior drew a
charge from Olive and helped the swing the momentum
back into his team's favor.
Just as All Hallows started gaining some momentum,
as a beautiful drive by Wachsmann put John Carey's
team up four, 50-46, with 2:20 to play, Loughlin
fought back, as Keith Jones knocked down a
straightaway three to slice the lead to one. It would
be their last rally, however, as Ramon hit two free
throws after a costly foul by Olive, and Santiago
snatched an Olive pass and took it in for the lay-in,
handing All Hallows a five-point advantage, 54-49,
with :45 seconds to play.
A pair of Santiago free throws would ice the game,
sending All Hallows to a semifinal match-up tomorrow with
upstart St. Peter's, who had knocked off Molloy.
The game marked the final appearance of Loughlin's
Curtis Sumpter, who had 17 points and impacted the
game at both ends of the floor, as well as accepting
defeat graciously. Junior wing Kirk Bunn added 12
points for Loughlin, while Olive and Jones chipped in
nine and eight, respectively.
