Brewster Academy (NH) is traditionally one of the top prep schools in the country. The 2003-04 season should be no different. Head coach Jason Smith gave Rivals Hoops a run down of his talented squad and the up to date news of each of their recruiting situations.

Adrian Joseph 6-foot-7 cancelled his official visit to scheduled official visit to Penn State this weekend because of Hurricane Isabel. The Nittany Lions have already made an in-home visit, as have Virginia and Boston College. Pittsburg, Maryland and Villanova will be coming in next week to talk to Joseph and Smith.

University of Washington coaches Lorenzo Romar and Cameron Dollar were at Brewster on Wednesday, making a visit to their pledge Joel Smith. The 6-foot-4 wing committed to the Huskies back in June.

Brewster’s other committed player is Marcus Hammond, a 6-foot-3, 185 pound shooting guard, who pledged to College of Charleston in the first of August.

Dion James, a 6-foot-1 combo guard originally from Milwaukee, WI is getting looks from William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth, Evansville (who have already made an in home visit) and Columbia (who is coming to Brewster next week).

Cederick Middleton, a 6-foot-1, 185 pound point guard with the body of a strong safety has two offers on the table from New Hampshire and Maine. Middleton will take an official visit to Maine on October 4th and then to New Hampshire on October 11th.

Michael Binns is a 6-foot-7, 215 pound forward and has interest from the likes of South Alabama, Oakland University and Maine. His frontcourt mate, Coley LeClair from Illinois is getting looks from several American East schools as well as Oakland University. LeClair has a nice touch for a 6-foot-9, 230 pound player.

Idong Ibok, a 6-foot-10 center from Nigeria who is back in his homeland waiting for his student visa to clear, may come to Brewster Academy to play but right now, odds aren’t looking too good.

“Odds of him coming (back to the United States) are about 25%,” Brewster head coach Jason Smith said. “He said it’s going to be extremely difficult to get the student visa without an in. It’s much easier to get a visa for college though.”

Ibok is getting looks from high major schools like Michigan State, Indiana, Virginia, Arizona and Vanderbilt. He came to the United States on a tourism visa and played a couple of events with the Indiana Red AAU squad. Smith said Ibok scored over a 1000 on the SAT and tested well when he toured Brewster.

Smith said juniors Marlon Howe and Fabrice Tafo will be asked to play significant roles for Brewster this coming season. Howe, a 6-foot-9 forward/center from San Diego, already has offers from Fresno State and hometown school San Diego. The great nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Deacon Jones will likely see more high major schools come into the picture over the next two years.

“He knows he’s a four or a five. We’ll go to him a lot,” Smith said. “He knows what he is and he knows how to use his size.”

Tafo, a native of Cameroon, is a 6-foot-6, 215 power forward. Smith said the junior is garnering mid major looks at the moment.

Brewster will be playing in several tournaments throughout the course of the season. They’ll be playing at the prestigious War on the Shore tournament during the Thanksgiving holiday. Then they’ll be off to the Maine Central Institute tournament where New Hampton, Notre Dame Prep and MCI will be participating.

Holderness School in New Hampshire, Navy Prep and Hargrave Military Academy will come to Brewster for their own tournament in the new year. Then they’ll finish the season off at a tournament at New Hampton as well as the National Prep School tournament in Providence.
