2007 Bahamian prospect progressing

As basketball grows in popularity in the Bahamas, largely due to the anticipated success of LSU bound Magnum Rolle, more athletes are attempting to home their basketball skills in the hopes of coming to the states to finish their high school education and then play college basketball in America. Following in the footsteps of Rolle is 6-foot-9, 210-pound Garvin Hunt, a 2007 prospect from St. George High School in Freeport, Bahamas.
"You wouldn't believe how much Garvin has improved since this summer," said St. George head coach Darrell Sears about Hunt, who participated in the Nike Hoop Jamboree last summer. "People just didn't understand that he just began to play basketball. He has only been playing now for 11 months. Before last February, he had never played basketball a lot. Now he is really beginning to take to the game."

Averaging 10 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks per game, Hunt has caught the eye of a couple colleges.
"LSU wants to come back again and watch him," said Sears. "South Florida has also watched him and is showing interest. Other schools have heard of him and want to watch him this summer, but only LSU and South Florida have watched him play."
More than likely, Hunt will run with the Arkansas Wings this summer. He is also contemplating a move to the United States to finish high school as early as next year.
Still raw and with little experience, Hunt has played very well around the basket this season.
"Garvin is actually more fundamental than Magnum was at this point," said Sears. "He is tough inside with a good jump hook. He also shoots the ball well inside 15-feet.
"He has very good straight speed and can really get from block to block. He does need to work on his four way speed where he can change direction and move laterally."
College coaches have an opportunity to watch Hunt and the other top young prospects in the Bahamas early this spring at the St. George's Jaguar Showcase run by Coach Sears from April 15-17. Coaches interested in getting more information on the event can contact Coach Sears at 954-727-5101, and those interested in travel packages should call 1-800-545-1300 and ask for Donna at extension 5778.
