ESPNU and ESPN2, in conjunction with Paragon Marketing Group, will combine to present nine boy's high school basketball games this season as part of the Old Spice Red Zone High School Showcase. The series of games will include four of the top six teams from the USA Today Super 25. ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, allows for increased coverage of the sport and will televise six games, while ESPN2 will air three.
After featuring Lawrence North (Ind.) and top-ranked player Greg Oden ( against Dayton Dunbar - Ohio) on December 8, ESPN2 will continue its coverage of high school basketball and the Wildcats when they play inner-city rival North Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) on Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The previous day (Jan. 18) at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, Episcopal (Pa.) and Neumann Goretti (Pa.) will compete at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Also featured on the schedule will be three doubleheader games on ESPNU: the Academy National Invitational on Dec. 30; a matchup between several Tennessee schools on Jan. 28 and four prep programs representing New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia at the Prime Time Shootout on Feb. 11.
This is an opportunity for our networks to showcase top amateur talent that sports fans will someday cheer for at the collegiate and pro level," said Burke Magnus, vice president and general manager, ESPNU. "This was designed to serve the growing number of college sports fans that have an interest in high school sports."
Last year, ESPN2 televised three high school basketball match-ups that featured teams that went on to win their respective state championships: Lawrence North (Ind.), Poplar Bluff (Mo.) and Arlington Country Day School (Fla.). This season, the advent of ESPNU allows for increased coverage of this sport.
