It's tough to elude scouts and recruiters when
you're a 6'5'' wing who can shoot the lights out. But
outside of NYC circles, Gary Forbes is still a bit of
an unknown commodity.
Forbes, who plays for coach Wendell Saunders at
Banneker, is a member of the Riverside Church AAU
program, but hasn't received as much attention as he
should be getting at this point. A wiry 6'5'' guard
with a silky shooting stroke, Forbes is most dangerous
pulling up from deep. He is competent off the dribble,
however, slashing past opponents and twisting for
buckets on the interior. Forbes chips in on the glass
as well, and will get his share of rebounds, but
despite possessing enough size to pose problems for
frontcourt players at the high school level, he is
most comfortable on the perimeter, and it is readily
apparent that that is where he belongs.
Early on, UMass, Providence, and Hofstra have
expressed interest in Forbes, who is one of the top
scorers in the city at a 25 point per game clip.
Drexel and Boston University have also contacted Coach
Saunders, as each school has coaches with ties to New
York. Savvy recruiter Chuck Martin from Drexel, with a
thorough knowledge of the city's hoop landscape, no
doubt identified Forbes early.
Forbes carries an 81 scholastic average and has
scored 1000 on the SAT. Gary is a well-mannered and
personable young guy who no doubt would be a great
addition to a college program down the road.
