The 254th Five Star Orange & White Classic had a nice assortment of talent. Held at Fordham University's Rose Campus in the Bronx, NY, the famous all-star Game was well represented from all parts of the nation.
With players from NY, NJ, PA, MD, MA, NC and NV, the action packed game did not disappoint as the White Team won 108-99.
For the White Team, the youngest player on the court, Savon Goodman, a rising sophomore from the Academy of New Church (PA) got things started with a high flying putback. Tavon Sledge (L.I. Lutheran) responded with a layup off an assist from David Coley. The score was knotted at 7 points as the game as dominated by guard play early on.
Down 17-9 with 2:27, 6-foot-1 rising senior Matt Rista (St. Anthony, NJ) would nail one of two three pointers to pull the Orange team to within 3 points. Jerrell Wright (Dobbins Tech, PA), a 6-foot-7 rising junior, would end the quarter with hook shot for the Orange Team to keep the spread at 3, going into the second quarter.
While Kadeem Jack and Sledge came out aggressive for the Orange Team, Ashton Pankey started to heat up for the White Team to start a 5-0 run. Sledge, a 5-foot-8 rising junior, got the crowd hyped as he tried in vain to dunk over 6-foot-11 rising junior, Malcolm Gilbert (Academy of New Church). Undeterred by the block, Sledge followed up with a dunk on the following possession as the Orange took their first lead with 3:34 left in the half. The White Team would regain the lead taking a 47-42 lead into the second half.
6-foot-7 rising senior James Carlton (South Central, NC) scored inside as the White Teams lead grew to 11 early in the quarter. Rista would provide some offense with a nice floater as well as good assists. While the Orange would once again pull to within one the White team would surge ahead by double digits.
A dunk by 6-foot-9 rising junior Rakeem Christmas (Academy of New Church) off a slick feed from Sledge gave the Orange team some fire but they where still in the hole by ten to start the forth quarter. The Orange Team managed to cut the lead to 7 points but treys by Elijah Carter (St. Anthony, NJ) extended Whites lead once again.
With 2:15 remaining, Whites lead was still 10 points. Coley and Sledge tried to make a run at it but with 42 seconds, and down by 7 points, the Orange Team would fall short.
Elijah Gilbert (23 points) and Ashton Pankey (21 points) were co-MVP's for the White Team. David Coley led all scores with 25 points followed by Tavon Sledge with 17 points.
