Panthers keep New Rochelle winless

In the second game at the iS8/Nike Spring High School Classic, New Rochelle would kick it off by going up four-zip against an undermanned seven man Panthers team.

Quick buckets by Rashawn Stores and Kevin Parrom, however, would put Panthers up 9-4 early. The New Rochelle team would never see the lead again as the NY Panthers would go on to win 89-76.

John Calarco would score a midrange to pull New Rochelle to within 3 but big man Brian Wilson of Luhi would clean the defensive boards and be rewarded on the offensive end with a bucket off a Stores feed to reestablish the Panthers offensive space.

First half turn overs plagued the Panthers. That coupled with good ball movement by New Rochelle would almost keep the game close in the first quarter. That was until a defensive lapse late in the quarter by New Rochelle would result in a quick 8-0 run to end the quarter with the Panthers up 11 points.

In the second quarter, New Rochelle showed signs of life as DeParis Banks would hit a lay-up followed by a pull up jumper and a floater. Parrom however would negate Banks efforts nailing three balls.

A 2-3 zone would force New Rochelle to break press and Banks would do just that for a bucket. Unfortunately, New Rochelle could not make a dent in the Panthers lead as sparse buckets, intermittent sloppy play and a William Williams lay up at the buzzer would leave New Rochelle down 42-32 at the half.

A full court press by New Rochelle to start the second would bother the Panthers. A driving bucket by Calarco, however, would be all that the New Rochelle team could show for it. Sterling Gibbs would start to heat up, hitting a couple of jumpers to put the Panthers up by 12.

New Rochelle would show defensive toughness at times but it wasn't consistent. The Panthers would inch ahead more and more during those moments of inconsistency.

To start the final quarter New Rochelle would still be down by 12 as one of their key scorers, DeParis Banks, would sit out during much of the third saddled with fouls..

Mike Poole started the fourth with a short jumper as New Rochelle tried unsuccessfully to trap on the inbound.

Calarco would score a quick floater followed by a put back by Travis Wright for New Rochelle but the defensive prowess of Wilson and buckets by Stores and Poole would keep the Panthers lead consistent.

With 3:48 left, the Panthers lead was 16 points and time was running out for the team from New Rochelle.

Wright would score quickly on the inside but DeParis Banks became ineffective in the second half.

Gibbs was also able to play the New Rochelle point guard Alex Armiento soft on defense as he was primarily a distributor as opposed to a scorer.

With 2:11 left, the Panthers would spread the floor and run out the clock for the win 89-76 without of their key players, Omari Lawrence who was playing in the Wheelchair Classic for the Manhattan/Bronx Team.

High scorer for the Panthers was Kevin Parrom with 16 points followed by Brian Wilson with 15 points while John Calarco was high man for New Rochelle with 23 points.

New Rochelle's record in the iS8/Nike is now 0-2 while the Panthers record goes to 3-0.

Next up for the Panthers, NYCHoops #1 ranked team, is the Providence JamFest in Rhode Island.
