Singler, Smith shine in Les Schwab shootout

Duke fans who are fortunate enough to have a cable provider that includes ESPN U were treated to a special performance by two future Blue Devils in the finals of the Les Schwab Invitational in Oregon Saturday night.

Nolan Smith's Oak Hill Academy team ended up on top in the final score, but the 99-90 victory over Kyle Singler's South Medford squad was hard fought and by all accounts very exciting.

Smith scored 30 points on stellar 12-of-16 shooting from the field to lead Oak Hill to the tournament championship, but Singler did everything he could to carry his teammates on his back.

Despite trailing by 22 points entering the fourth quarter, South Medford battled back to make the final margin respectable, but Singler was a star throughout the game.

After being contained by foul trouble in the semifinals, the nation's fourth ranked player exploded for 39 points in the championship game on 16-of-26 field goal shooting.

Both Singler and Smith played all 32 minutes of the game, leaving no doubt as to who leads each respective team.

Both future Dukies had tremendous overall tournaments.

In four games, Smith averaged 23.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.3 steals.

Singler put up monster numbers as well, averaging 29.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steals.

Singler led all players at the tournament in scoring, while Smith's total ranked sixth. Smith's steals average was tops in the tournament.
