Unspectacularly spectacular. Efficiently exceptional. When you scan the court during warm-ups, Austin Freeman doesn't jump out at you as an elite prospect. But once the ball tips, you recognize him as an outstanding player.

After performing well not great the summer before his junior season, Freeman projected as a solid four-star prospect. But during his junior season at DeMatha, Freeman shed some excess weight and took the travel circuit by storm last spring.

After playing extremely well at the Real Deal on the Hill in mid-April, Freeman made an emphatic statement as an elite prospect at the last April event, The King James Classic. After rushing to the gym immediately after arriving on a flight that had been delayed, Freeman stepped on the court against O.J. Mayo and his D1 Greyhounds with only six minutes left in the first half.

Once the dust had settled, DC Assault had an overtime victory. Freeman had 30 points on 12 of 16 shooting from the field. Most of those shots were difficult pull ups in the mid-range area. That is a part of the game where so many players struggle, but not Freeman.

DeMatha head coach Mike Jones knew early on that Freeman would be good, but this good?

"I've watched Austin play since the end of his sixth grade year, and he has gotten so much better year by year," said Jones. "Every year he has added something to his game until he has become a special player.

"I knew he would be good, but now he is unbelievably good. You can't put a thought on that."

As good as Freeman was this spring and summer on the travel circuit, Jones expects him to be even better during his senior season at DeMatha.

"He is playing great. He's continued to trim down and is even more explosive and quicker. He is also embracing a leadership role for us."

And while Freeman continues to hone his game, only expect greatness when he plays his college ball at Georgetown. His efficient, yet explosive style is perfect fit for the Hoyas offense.

"Austin is perfect for the way Georgetown plays," commented Jones. "He doesn't need 10 dribbles to get something done with the ball, and he moves well without the ball. Also, he isn't afraid to give it up when someone else is open."
