Sheppard discusses commitment

USC's 2014 recruiting class grew by one member on Monday night when Waynesboro (Va.) Fishburne Military small forward Shamiek Sheppard committed to the Gamecocks.

There has been plenty of discussion in Columbia and beyond lately regarding USC head coach Frank Martin's coaching style, but it's one to which the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Sheppard was drawn.

"Frank is a very passionate coach and that's what I like about him," Sheppard explained.

The New York native became sold after his official visit to Columbia which took place last month during the week USC faced off against Auburn at home. He was asked to break down what he saw that gave the Gamecocks the edge to land him.

"The coaching staff, their amazing fan base, and beautiful campus," he listed.

Sheppard, who has been described as a physical slasher type, broke down his game in more detail as far as what USC fans can expect to see from him once he arrives in Columbia.

"I'm just an all-around player," he said. "My strengths are finishing around the rim, rebounding the basketball, getting out in transition, and playing defense."

The other two members of USC's 2014 class are guards Marcus Stroman and Temarcus Blanton, both of whom have signed letters of intent already. Sheppard, who will sign this spring, is excited about getting started this summer.

"I think Frank Martin is leading this team to a bright, promising future and I want to be apart of that," he said.
