Hyron Edwards progressing; GoldandBlack.com video

INDIANAPOLIS - Purdue needs a point guard for its Class of 2015 with no prospect having been on its priority board longer than East Chicago's Hyron Edwards.

The pursuit is on-going for the 5-foot-11 Rivals.com four-star prospect.

The Boilermakers have been at the center of Edwards' recruitment since they offered a scholarship two falls ago.

Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Michigan State have been others who've factored in at one time or another, with it still being relatively early for the high-scoring and athletic guard.

A new entry is joining the mix.

"I've been hearing from Xavier a lot and they might be trying to offer me soon," Edwards said Saturday afternoon, after scoring 19 points in East Chicago's win over Bloomington South at the Forum Credit Union Tip-Off Classic at Southport High School. "They were at practice (last) Wednesday."

Purdue has kept in close contact and hosted Edwards Sept .14 - for the Notre Dame football game - for the most recent of his many unofficial visits to West Lafayette

"Purdue's pretty nice, too. Coach is always calling me, texting me, to see how I'm doing and how Coach (Abe) Brown and the staff are doing.

"They ask me how my game's coming along, and school. We talk about a lot of different things off the court."

There are many associations with Edwards and Purdue. He's familiar with former East Chicago and Boilermaker stars E'Twaun Moore and Kawann Short, now in the NBA and NFL, respectively. His former teammate and high school coach's son, Anfernee Brown, is on Purdue's roster currently.

"It's local," Edwards said. "My family could come see me at any time, it being only an hour away or so. That's pretty great."

Purdue is also heavily recruiting Gary Bowman 2015 wing Davon Dillard, a friend of Edwards who the point guard has said in the past could conceivably factor into his recruitment, as well.

"We talk about things like that all the time," Edwards said of Dillard, not specifically about Purdue, but recruiting in general.

Saturday against Bloomington South, Edwards made five three-pointers - accounting for all of his field goals in his 19-point game - a bit of a different look for a player who's always excelled in the open floor and in getting to the rim.

"I think I'm making my teammates better and shooting the ball well, pull-ups and everything," Edwards said of his season to date. "That's a big thing for me right now, shooting the ball well and just making my teammates better."

"College ball can be about getting the ball off the rim and going and I can do that, but I can also score the ball in a halfcourt offense. That's a (plus), too, I guess, from what (coaches) are telling me."

This season, too, has been about leadership for Edwards.

"I'm talking more, being more focused in practice and not playing around as much," he said. "(I'm) getting the guys together. Damian Jefferson is playing pretty well for us. I penetrate and kick to him."

Jefferson, a very promising 2016 recruit, will be the next highly recruited East Chicago player.

Now, that's Edwards, in the throes of a process that doesn't seem like it'll end any time soon.

"Me and my family have been talking about it," Edwards said. "Maybe next year. I'm still enjoying it."

Edwards was asked what he'll be looking for when the time comes.

"Get me better," he said. "And the academic standpoint. Just somewhere that can help me get to the next level and help my all-around game."
