Pflueger working on adding to his game

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Of the many standouts that were visible during the Pangos Sweet 16 at Cabrillo High School, one class of 2015 wing was at his very best.

Despite it being just his second tournament of the spring, and coming off of an ankle injury that sidelined him for a few weeks, Rex Pflueger of Compton Magic Select and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei was on top of his game this past weekend.

Pflueger made it a point to prove that he is one of the elite outside shooters out West and he did that in convincing fashion.

The 6-foot-5 sharpshooter was dialed in from 3-point range on all three days of the tournament. Pflueger said that he has been tirelessly working on his shot every day in the gym.

It didn't matter where on the court he was, how deep behind the 3-point arch he was or if there was a defender draped all over him - if there was a second of breathing room, Pflueger was looking to shoot and it usually ended with good results.

The sophomore also showed off a part of his game that he has been working on in order to become a better ball handler. On multiple occasions, Pflueger was able to grab a defensive rebound, lead the break and find a teammate for a bucket, or get one for himself.

"I'm just working on my ball handling as much as I can," Pflueger said. "I'm doing things to build my basketball IQ, and always trying to get better."

The basketball IQ that Pflueger is building upon, combined with his supreme athleticism, is drawing a lot of interest from major college basketball programs.

"I've heard from pretty much all of the Pac-12," he said. "There's some new interest, too, from Notre Dame and Cal."

It comes as no surprise that all of the Pac-12 and a school like Notre Dame have begun to scratch the surface on the recruiting front with Pflueger. He is a player who already possesses a load of talent, an unbridled will to get better and absolutely no ceiling on his potential. The sky could be the limit for Pflueger if he continues to work and refine his game.
