DePaul Lands Third 2012 Commitment

DePaul may not be winning on the floor right now, but off the floor they have been busy finalizing their 2012 commitment list.

The DePaul coaching staff recently received a verbal commitment from 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard Durrell McDonald of Henderson, Nev. McDonald joins wing Jodan Price and forward DeJuan Marrero as members of DePaul's 2012 freshman class. Joining the newcomers next season will be former University of Illinois guard Crandall Head, who announced last week his intention to transfer to DePaul in time for the early portion of next season's schedule.

McDonald is often referred to as a combo guard that could play the point guard spot or play off the ball. Fitting in with the many of the current DePaul guards that head coach Oliver Purnell has recruited, McDonald has good speed and apparently is a good fit for DePaul's up-tempo system.

Often referred to as "Nugget," a nickname McDonald's father gave him, McDonald is the leader on his high school team the Green Valley Gators. As a do-it-all type of guard, he leads or ranks highly in many statistical categories for his team. Through 18 games McDonald averaged 21.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game.

Displaying a propensity to be aggressive also figures to fit in with what DePaul needs. As of Dec. 30 McDonald had averaged 3.3 steals per game.

Scholarship Update
With Head's eventual enrollment, along with the three freshmen coming aboard next season, DePaul has zero scholarships remaining for the 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes. This leaves a big issue considering that DePaul looks to be heavy on guards, but short on big men for future seasons.

There already has been plenty of roster movement since Purnell and his staff landed at DePaul, and more could happen soon. With DePaul still tied to many players in the next two recruiting classes, including big-time 2013 and frontcourt options, it would be difficult to see everyone staying.

Junior forward Tony Freeland was the most recent departure as he announced his desire to leave the program last week.
