CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Niner Report has learned that Alan Major and Co. have gotten a verbal commitment from 2012 SG Shawn Lester.
Lester, a 3-star rated prospect ranked No. 130 in the 2012 Rivals 150, also had interest from Clemson, East Carolina, Miami, N.C. State, Penn State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. The 6'2, 180-pounder had offers on the table from Duquesne and Charlotte.
"He's really been thinking about it and i just think the visit put him over the top," said Lester's high school coach Michael Micklow. "He really likes the coaching staff there, coach Odom in particular."
Micklow said Odom has recruited Lester since his days at Virginia Tech, and told the 2012 guard he was the 49ers' No. 1 priority.
"When he (Odom) came here, Shawn was the first guy he contacted," Micklow said. "He also has known some of the guys on the team at Charlotte."
Lester took an official visit to Charlotte on Friday, Aug. 26, along with 2012 Georgia PF Willie Clayton.
What should Niner fans expect from Lester on the court?
"The kid can flat out score," Micklow said. "Anyone that's recruited him, that's the first thing they notice. He can score from anywhere. His jumper gives him unlimited range. I think he's be an exciting player for them."
