July 6, 2011 - July is a big time in boys travel team hoops, with July 6-15 and 22-31 being what the National Collegiate Athletic Association has determined to be its summer evaluation periods; points in the calendar where Division I college coaches are allowed to actually scout players in game situations. Commonly known as open periods, these dates are vital to college coaches in college basketball's highest rung, allowing them to actually see possible recruits in competition, matched against players not on their high school team. It's a big deal, to say the least.
The DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area is widely acknowledged as a talent hotbed, consequently college coaches at all levels flock to it in serach of players. Kevin Jones, current head coach at St. Andrews School (MD) is bringing an event in the first of those aforementioned evaluation periods.
Jones noted of the DC Metro Certified Showcase, his flagship event "It's a regular tournament, run like a regular tournament. All games will be in the same gym and it won't be overbooked".
That's 65 teams, 17-under squads and 16 in each of the 15-under, 16-under classifications balling at the Discovery Sports Complex in Boyds, MD. The dates are July 8th - 10th.
"For those 15's and 16's, it might be one of their only opportunities to be in front of college coaches" added Jones. "It's small enough for everyone to be seen, big enough for high level teams to play in an eight court facility".
