Sunday was the final day of the Class A and Class AA NYSPHSAA championships team two competitive games did not disappoint. In the first game, Jamesville-DeWitt bested Long Island's Harborfields Tornadoes. In the finale, Mt. Vernon would earn its 9th title as they took care of a game Jamestown squad. Next up, the Federation Tournament of Champions in Albany, NY.
While Nick Fessenden topped yesterday's performance as Harborfields beat Byram Hills with 18 points and 19 rebounds, DaJuan Coleman and Tyler Cavanaugh's performance increased to another level. Pulling out in front by 12 points to start the second quarter and increasing that lead to 41-19 at the half.
The Tornadoes put up a valiant fight, coming to within 13 points of the lead in the fourth quarter but the Red Rams would once again extend their lead and win their 6th Class A title.
Coleman won the MVP, leading Jamesville-DeWitt with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Cavanaugh contributed 22 points and 13 rebounds. In addition to Fessesden's contribution, Mike McLeod added 17 points and 5 rebounds for Harborfields.
Jamesville-DeWitt advancess to the Federation T.O.C where they will play the NYCHoops.net #2 (L.I.) Long Island Lutheran Crusaders in the Class AA semifinal round on Friday March 25th at 6:45pm.
After a less than stellar performance on Saturday against Hills West in the semifinal round, Jabarie Hinds made up for lost time with an MVP showing against Jamestown.
Jamestown played on par with Mt. Vernon and even led in the early part of the first quarter and was tied with the Knights to start the second quarter. Receiving solid offense from Jaysean Paige and Joey Campion, the Jamestown Red Raiders only found themselves down, 33-30 at the midway point.
In the second half, the combination of Hinds and Khalid Samuels would give the Knights a small cushion but it would be enough of a cushion for Mt. Vernon to on to win to become the NY public school team with the most titles.
Hinds scored a game high 26 points to go with 5 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds for Mt. Vernon. Samuels added 17 points, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. Paige led the Red Raiders with 21 points and 6 rebounds while Campion contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds.
The Knights will head to Albany to play the NYCHoops.net #1 (NYC) ranked Boys & Girls Kangaroos on Saturday March 26th at 3:45 in the Federation T.O.C. Class AA semifinals.
