Memphis (Tenn.) Melrose forward Adonis Thomas announced Thursday that he will be staying in-state and close to home by attending Memphis.

Thomas selected the Tigers over finalists Arkansas, Florida, UCLA and Memphis' in-state rival Tennessee. The 6-6, 205-pound Thomas, ranked No. 15, in the Rivals 150, had his pick of schools.

"It was something I had to do in my heart and something I felt," Thomas said at his announcement. "I just knew if coach (Josh) Pastner got the right guys, the program could still (get) to where coach Cal had it. He did a great job when he was here, but coach Pastner is looking to do an even better job."

Thomas noted: "The Memphis tradition is not going to end now."

Actually it shows no signs of slowing down. His school, Melrose, is ranked No. 1 in the RivalsHigh preseason Top 25, which noted the rise of high school basketball in the city.

Thomas' selection means only three of the 25 five-star players are still undecided.

  • No. 17 Ben McLemore, a 6-5 shooting guard from St. Louis who is playing at Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill, is expected to choose between Missouri and Kansas.
  • No. 19 Norvell Pelle,a 6-8, 190-pound center from Compton (Calif.) Price, whose final five is all over the map: UCLA, Kansas, Oregon, Oregon State and Texas-El Paso.

  • No. 20 Cody Zeller, a 6-10, 210-pound power forward from Washington (Ind.) High, who is down to North Carolina, Indiana and Butler.

That's right, Butler. Amazing how a trip to the title game can help in recruiting.
