DUNCANVILLE, Texas - At 6-foot-9 and 229 pounds, San Antonio Antonian Prep's Darrious Hamilton has become something of a household name over the summer. Hamilton is a reliable and consistent big man for the San Antonio RoHawks 17, a team competing in this weekend's Great American Shoot-Out.
Hamilton has built a strong reputation of being a go-to power forward/center, balancing strength, athleticism and a soft touch around the basket. Ironically, Hamilton is participating in his very first GASO during the NCAA live evaluation period. TexasHoops.com Senior Writer Damon Sayles had a chance to chat with Hamilton early Friday evening.
2 MINUTES WITH DARRIOUS HAMILTON Do you consider yourself more a power forward or a center? "I think a mix of both. It just depends on who I'm playing against. If he's a big dude, I can take him to the rack and use my quickness. If he's a small dude, I can take it to him in the paint."
This is your first GASO in July. How's it been for you? "It's been really crazy. Seeing all the people here and all the coaches here was something I've wanted to see for a long time. It makes me want to go even harder."
What happened during the end of your sophomore year? "I had a knee injury last year, and my parents wanted me to sit out and rest. They wanted me to wait and come out this year with a big bang."
What's been the most exciting thing about playing for the RoHawks? "It's been fun. I've been working hard for the team. I've been working on my strength and using post moves. It's been a good year, and I can't wait to keep on going."
Which schools have been recruiting you? "Kansas State, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Missouri State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Wichita State."
Any offers yet? "I have an offer from San Jose State."
What do you want to get most out of the GASO experience? "I've been thinking about it since I was a freshman. The thought of being in a place like this and having the opportunity to play is amazing. My mindset is to go hard every minute."
