Valencia guard Lonnie Jackson is the SectionSports.comAthlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 3. The 6-foot-3 junior led the Vikings to the championship of the Chaminade Christmas Classic.
Jackson scored 33 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in a 60-59 win over Lancaster in the quarterfinals. The victory avenged an earlier loss to the Eagles and snapped Lancaster's five-game winning streak.
Jackson followed up that performance with a 23-point effort in a 68-64 semifinal win over Calabasas. It was just the second loss of the season for the Coyotes, who went on to defeat the hosts in the tournament's third-place game.
He closed out the tournament by logging 25 points and 9 assists in the title game as the Vikings romped over Granada Hills. Jackson helped Valencia build a 40-12 halftime lead and coast to a 74-48 victory that avenged a loss to the Highlanders in last season's Classic title game.
The Vikings are off to a 10-2 start this season and figure to be one of the top teams in Division I-A. Jackson is averaging over 26 points per game this season and set a school record with 38 points in a win over Grant last month.
