Rebels get pledge from coveted big man

DeMarco Cox garnered a four-star ranking from as an offensive tackle essentially without setting foot on a football field.

His potential is that enormous, his frame is that appealing, his feet that quick.

Cox's heart, however, can't be pulled away from the basketball court, where his skill set earned a four-star ranking in hoops as well.

So on Tuesday, Cox followed his heart, both in terms of the sport he wants to play and the school where he wants to play it. Cox, a 6-foot-8, 285-pound center/power forward from Yazoo City, Miss., committed to play basketball at Ole Miss on Tuesday. Cox, who plays AAU basketball for MBA Hoops, is ranked as the No. 62 prospect in the country and the No. 9 center prospect in the country by

Cox chose Ole Miss over offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina State and Southern Mississippi. Some of those offers were football-only scholarships, while other schools _ including Ole Miss _ had offered Cox in both sports. Should Cox elect to play football in college as well, he would count against the school's limit of 85 scholarships.

Cox played football for Yazoo City in the spring, and he was so impressive in a spring scrimmage at Millsaps College that ranked him as the No. 4 prospect in Mississippi and the No. 21 offensive tackle prospect in the nation.

Cox joins fellow four-star Dondrecous Nelson on Ole Miss' commitment list for the 2010 signing class. Nelson, a guard from Jackson (Murrah), Miss., is ranked by as the nation's No. 99 overall prospect and the No. 23 point guard by
