Gokhan Sirin High on Charlotte
With one scholarship left the Charlotte 49ers have their eye on St. Mary Ryken's sharp shooter Gokhan (Gok-Han) Sirin. Sirin is a 6'9'' 204 pound forward who averaged 17 points per game in his first season playing basketball in the United States.
Sirin's recent visit to the Charlotte campus this past weekend went very well according to St. Mary Ryken's Head Coach Dave Tallman.
"I think he liked it a lot," Tallman said. "I think he enjoyed the coaching staff. He had nothing but great things to say about them."
Tallman said Sirin has a lot of talent...especially when it comes to shooting the basketball. "Gokhan is a lethal shooter," Tallman said. "He is one of the best shooters I've ever seen. He's 6'9'' but is very very skilled."
Sirin shows his lethal shooting in a drill in practice called east buck five shot in which they shoot 40 three's and Tallman said Sirin usually hits 35 of them.
Sirin arrived in the United States in August from Turkey. Although he had been playing basketball his whole life he struggled adjusting to the American game in the beginning but eventually grasped it. "He started off slow but by the end of the season he was putting up big numbers against the best teams in the conference." One of those performances included a 20 point effort against national powerhouse DeMatha.
Tallman believes that Sirin's shooting ability would be an excellent fit for Charlotte. "He has a little fade to his shot so he's not a guy who's going to get his shot blocked," Tallman said. Tallman said that Sirin needs to put on more weight and once he does his potential is unlimited. "When he gets up to the 220-225 range he is going to have professional potential," he said. "There's no question about it."
Sirin has narrowed his list down to Charlotte, Loyola MD, and South Florida according to Tallman. He has already taken a visit to Loyola and is planning on taking a visit to South Florida but that has not been set up yet.
Associate Head Coach Rob Moxley has been Sirin's primary recruiter and has known Tallman for quite some time.
So how does Charlotte stack against the other two schools? "I think they are very high on his list," Tallman said. "I think he likes Charlotte a lot."
