While the new NCAA rule prohibiting college coaches from seeing prospects play in spring AAU games, Georgia coach Mark Fox, along with assistants Phillip Pearson and Kwanza Johnson, are still attempting to find some immediate help for the Bulldogs hoop squad.
One guard, Vincent Williams, is expected to visit this weekend. And now UGASports has learned of another potential target.
Gulf Coast Community College point guard Derrio Green, at 6-foot, 162-pounds, had an impressive season last year.
The Panama City native averaged over 13 points, 5 assists, to go with his .477 field goal percentage. He also made 76 of 172 shots from outside, for a .440 3-point percentage. In a recent first-round win over favorite Miami-Dade, the freshman erupted for a 38-point performance. He was named to the Florida Juco All-Tournament team.
Colleges have taken notice in the young guards ability to score and dish it out. Green has offers from UNC-Charlotte, George Washington, Troy, Colorado State and South Alabama. UCF, St Louis and Toledo are on him as well. Well, we can apparently add Georgia to the list.
According to Gulf Coast head Coach Jay Powell, Green will be a busy man in the next few days.
"Green is on his way to UNC-Charlotte today, and he will be in Athens on Sunday," Powell said. "After that, he will decide if he wants to take any other visits as well.
Powell admitted that Green needs to continue to add weight to fully realize his potential. But he knew all along that he would be a mid- to high major talent.
"The sky is the limit for Green in my opinion," Powell said. "If he can get in a weight room and add 15-20 pounds, he can definitely contribute in the SEC."
