The Weekly Spin: Mining a Diamond
There are a number of a catch phrases that are labeled on prospects, including the popular "Diamond in the Rough". While the focus of fans becomes undeniably on the diamond side of the standout, more often than not it is the rough that makes a prospect what he eventually becomes. Nigerian born prospect Festus Ezeli is the spotlight in this edition of The Weekly Spin, and for good reason. He's a gem.
At the Cal Basketball Elite Camp, the 6-foot-11, 240-pound Ezeli turned heads immediately, despite a group full of talented big guys. The list included two of the Top 35 2008 prospects in the country - Mt. Zion Christian Academy power forward Terrence Jennings and Berkeley (Calif.) power forward Matt Simpkins - along with a number of other talented big men in the 2009 class like Rocklin center Brendan Lane and Modesto (Calif.) Christian power forward Reeves Nelson. Ezeli, who played with Lane some last year during AAU ball, matched up often with Jennings and Simpkins and more than held his own.
