Coast to coast with Matt Gatens

You'll have to apologize for Matt Gatens these days if he doesn't appear to know which time zone he is waking up in. In the last two weeks, the future Hawkeye started out in Iowa, spent a weekend in the Bronx, then headed to Virginia for most of the week, and is now out in Southern California spending some time picking up tips from Kobe Bryant.

A little over a week ago, Gatens and his teammates on Martin Brothers 17 and under AAU team headed to New York City for The Rumble in the Bronx, a loaded AAU event featuring some of the top teams and players in the country. The little team from Iowa more than held their own, finishing in second place.

The 6-foot-5 guard never made it back to Iowa after the outstanding performance in the Bronx. He headed to Virginia with 100 of the top prospects in the country for the NBA Players Camp, where he learned plenty about basketball and even more about life.
