Bob Gibbons TOC: Day One
Opening day of the 2007 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions was a rather uneventful one for Appalachian State prospects. Due to NBA caliber talent dominating many of the rosters, Mountaineer and other mid-major prospects often found themselves locked into the role player jobs.
But, when they did find the floor, the majority of them took advantage of their opportunities and showed why ASU has them on their watch list.
In the 6:30 p.m. time slot, two teams with App State recruits hit the floor at the Dean Smith Center to get the TOC kicked off. On court two, the CP3 All-Stars, featuring Cherryville High power forward Justin Johnson and Apex High small forward Yorell Hawkins (6-foot-5, 205 pounds), opened the tournament with a close win, 68-66, over the Pittsburgh Storm.
Though Johnson appears on the roster, the 6-foot-7, 210-pounder was not in attendance for Friday's opening game. He is, however, expected to return to the team on Saturday and participate in all three games being played.
Hawkins performed well as he poured in 14 points in the CP3 All-Stars opening night win.
