Schilling leads Ellsworth to state title

Saturday afternoon, Ellsworth beat Cass Lake-Bena 74-73 in one of the most amazing basketball games in Minnesota State Tournament history. In the final seconds, Cody Schilling hit teammate Aaron Van Der Stoep with the pass freeing Aaron for this 10th made three-pointer of the game and a state championship.

Both teams were right on one another's heels throughout the contest. Van Der Stoep nailed four three-pointers early in the game setting the tone for his team. Cass Lake-Bena played a zone defense in the first half as did Ellsworth and the result was a lot of long range shooting. After Ellsworth took the early lead, Cass Lake-Bena came back later as both Travis Huesers, a junior, and freshman Martin Wind sunk a pair of triples.

Cody Schilling, a 6-foot-5 junior, had five first half assists as he spent the start of this game opening up his teammates for clean looks. Schilling would break down the defense with penetration and when the help sunk down, shooters were open on the wing and cutters were open at the basket. The Cass Lake defense loves to trap and they often trapped Schilling but with his calm demeanor and fantastic skill set, he would just lower himself and step through the trap swinging the ball through. Twice he picked up assists breaking through the trap as the Cass Lake defense was not able to make it to the open shooter in time.
