Kamp and Bayless to match-up in Arizona final
Just as Arizona and Cal collided on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion, two Arizona prep basketball stars, future Wildcat Jerryd Bayless and Golden Bear Harper Kamp, found out tonight that they will conclude their prep basketball careers against each other. In a battle of Arizona high school hoops supremacy, Mountain View will take on St. Mary's for the 2007 5A-1 State Championship.
In a rematch of the 2005 State Big School Championship, which Mountain View won 69-53, St. Mary's will once again take a shot at the champ. The Toros are the two-time defending state champs, and sport an 88-8 overall record over the past 3 seasons. Those 8 losses have come at the hands of some of the best teams in the country, including USA Today's No. 12 ranked Artesia, No. 17 ranked South Medford, and No. 20 ranked Desert Vista. Desert Vista and Dobson have actually posted two wins apiece against Mountain View dating back to the start of the 2004-05 season, however, the Toros have dished it back. Over the past three years, Mountain View has handed Desert Vista and Dobson a combined 12 losses.
But the story isn't about any of the other Arizona Big School basketball crown contenders, or some of the other great national prep programs. The finalists in Arizona are St. Mary's and Mountain View in 2007.
