Burrell readies for AAU, and next season

The last time we caught up with Justin Burrell, the 6-foot-8 forward was getting ready to handle his business at Fordham University for the Rumble in the Bronx tournament. Since signing with the Red Storm this past May, Burrell has been all over New York City, playing in the whirlwind circuit that is AAU basketball.

It's a long way from where he was four years ago as an unknown freshman at Our Saviour Lutheran High School.

"When I first got him, Justin didn't want to play basketball," says OSL Coach Oswald Cross. "Back then all he wanted to do was watch television."

Last season, Burrell put up 15 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks a game to lead OSL to a 15-6 record New York's CHSAA league.

"Justin now wants the ball," says Cross. "I see a big difference from then to now."

When the summer circuit concludes, Burrell will make one more stop before heading to Queens, to start his career with Norm Roberts. He's spending a year at Bridgton Prep in Maine. A year that will help him as a player and as a student.

"Being up there [Maine] will help me get my grades right and get me more prepared for the game on a college level," Burrell said.
