Gatens scores 50 in AAU victory

Future Hawkeye Matt Gatens had a huge game in the Kentucky Grassroots Shootout this past weekend, scoring 50 points in the championship victory for Martin Brothers. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound sophomore, who averaged 20.3 points per game at Iowa City High this past season, played mostly two-guard in the 17 and under AAU tournament.

The Iowa basketball team, of course, has had several changes this off-season with head coach Steve Alford replacing two assistant coaches. While Gatens had a good relationship with the departing coaches, especially Greg Lansing, he thinks the change can be a good thing for the program.
