The next Adreian Payne?
Deyonta Davis (6-9, 215) is still a bit off the radar of national recruiting analysts, but getting a commitment from the fast-rising in-state power forward on Wednesday represents the biggest recruiting victory for Michigan State since Tom Izzo and his staff signed Gary Harris[db] two years ago.
Muskegon Coach Keith Guy didn't expect Davis to end the process as abruptly as he did, but he believes his player selected a program that fit him well.
"I think he made a great decision," said Guy. "He likes what he likes, and he isn't one of those kids that needs a lot of attention. He told me that he wanted to commit to Michigan State, and he didn't want to wait. We got Coach Izzo on the phone and DD let him know that he was going to Michigan State."
Izzo was ecstatic.
"Coach Izzo told DD that he was looking forward seeing him become the next [db]Adreian Payne[/db] at Michigan State," said Guy. "He told him that he wanted to put some guys around him that could make this class special. He said that having Deyonta in this class was a great start because he felt that guys would want to play with him because he is a special player."
