Football season is just under a month away, and no one is more ready than Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.) defensive lineman Toby Johnson.
It can be argued that no one as worked harder to get ready for it.
At the start of the summer, Johnson, by his own admission, needed to drop a few pounds as he stood 6-foot-4, 322 pounds.
With fall camp starting up, the JUCO standout is almost exactly where he wants to be in terms of weight.
"I've had a great summer. I've worked really hard, and I think I'm in great shape," said Johnson. "I'm almost down to my playing weight. I weigh about 305 pounds right now, and just a few more pounds to go before I get back to where I was. I'm ready to go."
The summer hasn't just been a successful time for Johnson when it comes to training either.
The four-star defensive lineman has also had a chance to spend time on his recruitment, and that, too, has gone very well.
"Recruiting has been really good this summer, too," said Johnson. "I had a great visit to Nebraska, and they are a school I really like. I also got to see Oklahoma. It was mainly schools that were close to out here because I have been here working hard the whole summer."
Despite the fact that Johnson's visits focused primarily on Big 12 schools this summer, he says that schools from all over the country are recruiting him hard, and especially schools in the SEC.
"Aside from the SEC, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Miami are probably recruiting me the hardest," said Johnson. "In the SEC, pretty much everyone is recruiting me hard. Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and a lot of others schools are coming after me. I think some other schools are about to offer, too. Florida State has been in contact a lot lately."
One school Johnson is very familiar with is UGA due to the fact that he grew up in Georgia and went to high school a Banneker in Atlanta.
According to the star defender, UGA is a team that he holds in high regard.
"I talk to Coach (Rodney) Garner a lot and he is one of my favorite guys," said Johnson. "He's a real good coach and I've known him for a long time. I know for a fact that I'm going to take an official visit to Georgia in December. That's a definite."
Johnson, who says that he will definitely be enrolling early, isn't quite ready to name a top group of schools, and he isn't sure when that time will come.
"I know I will have to at some point, but like I said, there are a few schools still close to offering," said Johnson. "I want to make sure I look at as many things as I can before I start narrowing things out. I have places that I have liked a lot so far, and some schools I really like. I'm just not ready to take anyone out yet."
