Staten plays waiting game

It's been a year of change for Wesley Staten. The talented 2012 combo guard switched high schools to Sioux City Heelan last year and just recently made a change in his AAU team. Staten moved from Kingdom Hoops to the Iowa Barnstormers at the start of the AAU season and is feeling comfortable in his new surroundings.

"I just started playing again after switching teams and started playing with the Iowa Barnstormers," Staten said. "I think we worked out our kinks in Milwaukee and we have played pretty well here in Chicago. I think we are coming together now and I'm starting to feel more comfortable with my teammates."

The 6-foot-2 guard was scoring in bunches in Chicago at the King James Summer Showcase with dozens of college coaches looking on. He currently has offers from Iowa State and picked one up from South Dakota State following his performance in Milwaukee. Staten hopes that business starts to pick up shortly when it comes to recruiting.

"It's really up to me to change my recruitment by playing well," he said. "I feel like I'm probably not being recruited as much as I should be, but that's what these events are all about. You have to come out and show what you've got in front of the coaches."

The Hawkeyes have kept in touch with the talented guard during the past year and seem to be showing some interest.

"I've talked to Coach Speraw a few times and he seems to be a real good guy. They say they are keeping an eye on me. They also talk to my coach at Heelan and he keeps them updated on how I am doing."

Right now, Staten said he is wide open when it comes to recruiting and hopes to hear from more schools after the July evaluation period concludes.
