Iowa checks out four-star prospect
The Iowa coaches have hit the road this week, making their way to high school gyms around the country. One of the stops made today by Assistant Coach Sherman Dillard was to check in on four star prospect DeJuan Marrero from Gary, Indiana.
"Coach Dillard came by the gym tonight to watch me workout," he said. "Coach Dillard is a great guy and he watched me play tonight, which was great. We really can't talk to the coaches, but he always tells me to keep working hard on my game."
Marrero made a short stop in Iowa City last summer and checked out Carver-Hawkeye Arena. He said that Iowa was at one of his high school games at the start of the season for Bowman Academy and they have kept in touch with him.
"I hear from Coach Dillard and he has been recruiting me. Iowa hasn't offered me yet, but they are going to watch me this summer."
The 6-foot-5 prospect who is ranked by Rivals.com as the 99th best player in the Class of 2012 currently holds offers from Indiana, DePaul, Illinois, Memphis, Ohio State, and Purdue.
"I have been thinking about narrowing my list of schools down this spring, but even though Iowa hasn't offered, they still have a chance to be in there. I haven't ruled anyone out and I am still wide open," he said Tuesday evening.
This past season, Marrero averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds a game at Bowman Academy. Since the end of the season he has been in the gym trying to expand his game.
"I've been working hard on my overall game, especially my shooting. I think my jump shot is coming along, but I still have to keep working to improve it. I'm in the gym very day working hard."
Marrero will be playing this spring and summer with the Spiece Indy Heat 17's team.
"We just played in St. Louis at an event this past weekend and I am looking forward to the rest of the AAU schedule this spring and summer."
