Washpun picks up Iowa offer
To say that the last 24 hours have been a little crazy for Wes Washpun might be an understatement. The Cedar Rapids native has patiently waited as the start of the spring signing period drew closer hoping for high major scholarship offers to come. On Tuesday night his patience paid off as Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said he was offering a scholarship.
"It was really exciting to get the Iowa offer tonight," Washpun said. "I grew up a Hawkeye fan my whole life. Getting the offer tonight was really nice."
On Monday night the Cedar Rapids Washington point guard spoke with Coach Fran McCaffery and the two plan on meeting on Thursday afternoon. It's a meeting that Washpun is obviously looking forward to.
"The interest from Iowa is great because it is the home state school and the main school in the state," he said. "I'm looking forward to spending time with Coach McCaffery and his staff and hearing what he has to say about what my role could be on the team."
The 6-foot guard is waiting to hear back from new Tennessee Head Coach Cuonzo Martin, who offered Washpun when he was at Missouri State, about a potential scholarship opportunity with the Volunteers.
"I talked to him this past Saturday and it was a good conversation. He said he had to talk to the people that had already committed to Tennessee and based on their decisions he would be in contact with me after that."
In addition to hearing from Coach Fran McCaffery on Monday night, Washpun also heard from new Missouri State Head Coach Paul Lusk, who told him that his scholarship offer is still on the table.
"I actually talked to him last night and he said my scholarship offer stands and he would love to have me down there at Missouri State. He said he wants to come up sometime this week to meet with me and my family," he said.
The patient approach has certainly paid off for Washpun, who says he will talk with this family and coaches to help him make his final decision sometime before the signing period begins on April 13th.
"A lot of people told me to wait and just be patient and that with not being a full qualifier earlier that once I got that, things would start to happen. Everything has started to fall into place and I am really excited about that."
