Washpun plays the waiting game

When Wes Washpun decided not to sign a letter of intent in the fall, he knew that when the spring signing period came along that it could be a situation where his potential college choices could change rapidly and that it might take some time.

The 6-foot guard from Cedar Rapids Washington High School is experiencing some of those anxious moments now as a school he visited is now looking for a new head coach and that could lead to another door opening.

Washpun recently took an official visit to Missouri State and gave the visit high marks. Then over the weekend, Missouri State Head Coach Cuonzo Martin was hired by Tennessee to replace Bruce Pearl.

"I'm getting a little anxious and things are happening really fast," Washpun said Tuesday evening. "Coach Martin called me after he took the Tennessee job and told me that he needed to assess the situation there first before he could make any move with me. He is supposed to call me Wednesday night to let me know more."

As far as Washpun knows his offer from Missouri State still stands, pending the hiring of a new coach. He also has offers from South Dakota, South Dakota State, and North Dakota on the table. He has also been receiving regular phone calls from Miami, FL, and Clemson, but they have not extended a scholarship offer.

One other school that continues to stay in close contact is Iowa, who recently requested a copy of his transcripts.

"It has picked up in the last two weeks, but still no offer on the table for Iowa. They tell me they are still evaluating some stuff, so we will just have to wait and see what happens."

Washpun has no other official visits scheduled at this time. One thing that he knew when he decided to wait until the spring signing period was that the process could become drawn out and now he just tries to remain patient and let it play out.

"After I decided to not sign in the fall, I knew this would probably be what happened. I just have to stay patient and let things fall into place."

On Friday night, Washpun will be lacing up his sneakers once again to participate in the 2011 Eastern Iowa All Star game at Linn Mar High School. Tip time is 7:30 for the boys game and Washpun will be teaming up with his high school teammate and future Hawkeye Josh Oglesby on one of the teams.
