Guerrero set to visit Iowa

Coach Fran McCaffery and his staff have been hitting the recruiting trail hard in the past month. This weekend the Iowa coaches hope to leave a good impression on one of their top targets in the 2011 spring signing period in point guard Cezar Guerrero, who will make his way to Iowa City for an official visit.

Coach McCaffery used last week's break in the Big Ten schedule to fly out to California to see Guerrero in person, as his St. John Bosco High School team fell in the state playoff despite 30 points from the talented point guard.

"Coach McCaffery came out here last week and Cezar will be visiting Iowa this weekend," said his AAU coach with Belmont Shores, Dinos Trigonis. "He will get in on Friday night and go to the Purdue/Iowa game on Saturday and visit the campus."

Trigonis said that Guerrero just returned from his visit to Oklahoma State last weekend and will probably take only one more visit after Iowa this weekend. Guerrero has a long list of suitors vying for that visit, including Kansas, Florida State, and others.

Heading into the visit, Iowa has some good connections with Guerrero that they hope will pay off this weekend.

"When Coach (Sherman) Dillard was working at Nike, he got Cezar into a skill camp as a freshman," Trigonis said. "Also, Bryce Cartwright's father is coaching one of the basketball teams at the high school, so he knows the family of a player already at Iowa."

Trigonis says that Guerrero has flown under the radar when it comes to national exposure due to the fact that he missed a summer of AAU Basketball between his sophomore and junior year due to injury and then missed his junior year due to transfer rules. Now he is starting to emerge as one of the top available point guards in the Class of 2011.

"He's probably not gotten the attention that he deserves nationally due to the time he missed, but in a lot of ways it motivated him to work harder, " he said. "He's not your traditional point guard. He plays with a flare to his game and is more of a scoring point guard. He is a fearless kid who is hardnosed and willing to take big shots."
