Gotcher excited about future
Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial shooting guard Toddrick Gotcher committed to Texas Tech at the end of September, and since then, the reactions have been nothing but positive for the 2011 prospect.
"The reaction has been crazy since I committed. Just a lot of love and support shown to me from my family and friends. Everyone here is excited for me," Gotcher said. "Just the other day at work people I didn't even know were just coming up to me and congratulating me. It's just an honor for me right now to have all of these people aware of what I'm doing. It feels really good."
It's been a long process for Gotcher who has been recruited by Texas Tech since his freshman year. After multiple visits to the program, the atmosphere surrounding the team was what drove Gotcher to pull the trigger.
"It's just like a family there. I felt like with Coach Chris Beard and Coach Pat Knight, they've built a real family atmosphere around their program," he said. "I've got a relationship with the coaches because they've been recruiting me since my freshman year. I kind of felt like I had grown up with those guys, and now I can keep doing the same thing when I get there."
"I got along well with the staff and the other players, and I loved the city. It was all really laid-back and tight-knit. The environment and campus was awesome. The academic side of things was great too. Everything was perfect for what I'm looking for."
Gotcher says he's continued to hear from San Diego since his commitment to the Red Raiders, but he's no longer entertaining thoughts of playing basketball elsewhere. He said he's "done" with recruiting, and won't be taking any other visits unless they're to West Texas. He continues to remain in contact with Coach Beard, and points to Beard's history as a factor in the relationship they've built so far.
"Coach Beard. He's a great guy. My high school coached with him back in the day so all three of us are close. My coach let me know what kind of guy Coach Beard was before I got to know him, and everything he told me was true. We've got a really good relationship for sure."
"I'm going to try and catch a couple of their games for sure. Hopefully I can get up to a few home games before Christmas," he said. "I'm definitely going to try and catch Tech when we go to Baylor since it's a little bit closer to me."
Even though the 6-foot-3, 190-pound commit still has a season left to play on the high school level, he's already looking forward to not only his future at Texas Tech, but the future of the program itself.
"I'm looking forward to seeing them play this year, but I'm even more excited to eventually get on the floor with them. I think the future for Coach Knight and our team is very bright."
Gotcher committed to Texas Tech over offers from Auburn, Baylor, the Citadel, Drake, Houston, NC Wilmington, North Texas, Pennsylvania, San Diego, San Jose State, SMU, Tulane, and UTEP.
