If nothing else, the first week of spring football drills at the University of Alabama proved one thing: even Nick Saban needs more than five practices to turn around a 6-7 team.
As productive as the Saban era might ultimately prove to be, Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor were not part of the deal that brought Saban to Tuscaloosa. With six of the front seven starters who helped Alabama to national top two defensive rankings in 2004 and 2005 having moved on, the personnel tab has come due. And based on what we saw last week, Saban and his staff might find themselves in the uncomfortable position of floating a check while waiting on some of their linebacker and defensive line recruits to begin to pay dividends.
