Kirk Walters needs consistency as senior

Arizona senior center Kirk Walters arrived in Tucson on August 19, 2003 after a three-day cross-country drive from Grand Rapids, Michigan with his parents and younger brother.

Two nights later, Walters played in his first pickup games with his Wildcat teammates and spent the next three hours matching up with star big man Channing Frye in a series of games to eleven.

I was there for the action, took stats and talked to Walters after it was over.

Frye, then 6-foot-10 and 250-pounds, dominated the incoming freshman Walters all night, ending up with 60 points, 21 rebounds and four blocked shots over the course of seven games.

Walters, meanwhile, struggled to breathe and finished with 26 points, 16 boards and two blocks.

Afterwards, an exhausted Walters didn't have much to say about the experience.

"That was really hard," he said as sweat dripped from his reddened face. "I am very tired."
