Gary plays role as Hawkeye recruiter

His name is not on the Top 150 list of Rivals.com for 2007, but a few more performances like the one he had recently at the Tournament of Champions in North Carolina, and Dariese Gary might just find himself on there.

"Hopefully I will get there soon," Gary said. "I expect that will happen, but winning will probably take care of it I think."

If recent events are the judge of things to come, then the 6-foot-1 guard from Indiana might be right. Gary was impressive in his point guard play at the Tournament of Champions, where his AAU team, Indiana Elite lost in the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament. It also included a very strong performance by Gary in the semi-finals against a strong team from Pittsburgh.

"I had 21 against the Pittsburgh Jots and most of those were in the second half. I think I had a pretty strong overall tournament," he said.

While the spring and summer is a way for a prospect to improve his own stock in the rankings, Gary, who committed to Iowa this past year, is also out playing part time recruiter. One of his AAU teammates, Beas Hamga, made his commitment to Iowa this past weekend.

With Hamga in the fold for the Class of 2008, Gary will continue his own private recruiting efforts with several of his AAU teammates who Iowa has offered or might offer in the future.
