Video: Summers has monster game in Bunn rematch
HILLSDALE, Mich. - Future Michigan State wing Durrell Summers helped his team take a big step on the path to the MHSAA finals with a regional semifinal win over a powerful Lansing Christian opponent Tuesday evening.
Summers scored a team-high 25 points and added 21 rebounds to propel Redford Covenant to a 58-44 victory over Lansing Christian and into Thursday's regional final against a Jackson Christian team, whom many experts feel is the team to beat for a Class D state title.
"This was a big step," said Summers. "Thursday is another step. We are playing well and we are ready to prove everybody wrong and make that run to the Breslin Center that all of us want so bad."
The other favorite, Lansing Christian, was sent home by Summers and his Redford Covenant teammates despite a strong performance from senior point forward Peter Bunn, who led the Pilgrims with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
Summers and his teammates traveled to Hillsdale hoping to turn the tables on Lansing Christian, which bounced them from the playoffs in last year's regional final. Summers and his teammates played well against the Pilgrims in their regional game one year ago, but didn't do the little things necessary to put away a solid team.
