South Carolina picked up another piece of the 2012 class on Friday when 6-foot-6 forward Michael Carrera made his plans to take his talents to Columbia official.
Carrera, who plays prep ball at Montrose Christian in Maryland, went on the record with GamecockCentral.com.
"It's definite now," he said. "I'm on my way to South Carolina. My coach is driving me there. I should be there tomorrow. I'm going to be starting classes real soon."
Carrera broke down the reasons why USC is the place for him.
I like everything. There's great people there. I like Coach Frank (Martin) and Coach (Matt) Figger. The first time that I went there I felt like that was the state I wanted to be in. I like the campus and my teammates. It's where i want to be and it's what I was looking for."
What kind of game will Carrera bring to the Colonial Life Arena?
"I play on the inside at the four and outside at the three," he said. "I can play the two if I need to. I'm going to work hard and play with my heart like I always do."
Montrose Christian assistant Don Shopland explained the delay in giving the official word that Carrera was bound for Carolina.
"We knew that's where he wanted to be after his visit, but at the same time we wanted to make sure he saw some other things and we had to make sure the school would accept him," he said. "Michael still had academic work to do at the time so we didn't want a commitment to be made and him not have other options out there if need be."
Pitt, Memphis, UAB, and Richmond were some of the other programs in addition to South Carolina that were recruiting Carrera, who is now committed, has signed with, and been accepted by USC.
